Faces of Evil / Zelda’s Adventure (CD-I Part 3) – Angry Video Game Nerd

In the third and final video in the Nerd’s CD-I series he plays through Link: The Faces of Evil and Zelda’s Adventure. Link: the Faces of Evil plays similarly to Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon and faces many of the same problems, including the confusing layouts and stiff controls.
Zelda’s Adventure is a different style game; it’s played with an overhead view and is modelled more like the original Zelda on NES. Its cut-scenes also use real actors instead of the zany cartoons so prevalent in the previous titles. Although it’s different, it’s not much better and features long loading times, annoying voice acting and a broken save system. The item menu also adds to the frustration; you must constantly be pulling it up and toggling through it to make any sort of progress. All three of these Zelda games and Hotel Mario have added to the CD-I’s legacy of being one of the worst consoles ever made, and one of the video game market’s biggest failures.

Zelda Wand of Gamelon (CD-I Part 2) – Angry Video Game Nerd (AVGN)

In part two of the Nerd’s CD-I series he plays through Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon: one of the three Zelda games released on the system. After failed plans with Nintendo, Phillips had permission to use Zelda characters for the CD-I; however Nintendo had no input in the games development besides some character designs.

The game is a side-scroller in similar style to Zelda 2, but you play as Zelda instead of Link. Its frustrating controls, confusing layouts and bizarre animated cut-scenes have led to it being universally panned by critics and gamers alike.

Hotel Mario (CD-I Part 1) – Angry Video Game Nerd (AVGN)

The CD-I was released in 1991 by Phillips. They were originally working with Nintendo to produce a CD based add-on for the Super Nintendo, but when that didn’t happen, the console known as the CD-I was born. It was a massive failure, and the whole project lost the company nearly a billion dollars. Interestingly enough, after their deal fell through with Nintendo, they were still contractually allowed to use their characters for their system.
In part one of the three-part CD-I series, the Nerd takes a look at console’s only Mario title: Hotel Mario. After plans to develop a sequel to Super Mario World were scrapped, this game about closing hotel doors was made. Its bland gameplay and confusing controls has given it the reputation of being one of the worst Mario games ever made.
