For almost 40 years, Studio Ghibli has continued to redefine animation as an art form, producing some of the most gorgeous hand-drawn feature films ever to grace the screen. Largely thanks to the signature art style and vibrant imagination of its founder, Hayao Miyazaki, Ghibli’s movies have captivated viewers of all ages. IGN’s staff put their heads together to pick the studio’s ten best films, and rank them. It was no easy task, as they’re all special in their own way, from Princess Mononoke’s brutal fantasy in ancient japan to Nausicaa and The Valley of the Wind’s bleak vision of a post-apocalyptic future, to the more family friendly fare like My Neighbor Totoro and Ponyo. Whether you want to cry watching Grave of the Fireflies, or have a hearty chuckle at that loveable airborne swine Porco Rosso, or enjoy the placid tempo of Kiki’s Delivery Service, there’s really a Studio Ghibli movie for every mood. It’s worth noting, we started production on this video well before OpenAI released an updated model for ChatGPT that allowed users to generate images in Studio Ghibli’s style. Artificial intelligence is a contentious topic, and this particular use stirred up an especially heated discourse. While AI might have its valid uses, it’s hard not to see a problem (or at the very least, the irony) in using artificial intelligence to mimic the work of a team of artists who’ve so painstakingly injected humanity and life into their films, almost completely by hand.
