Daredevil: Born Again Creator Explains the Punisher Story That’s ‘Begging to Be Told’

Jon Bernthal is back as Frank Castle, a.k.a. The Punisher! And now he’s officially part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe thanks to his appearance in Daredevil: Born Again, which has been confirmed in trailers and by the show’s producers.
Mild spoilers follow for Daredevil: Born Again’s first two episodes!
So with Born Again Episode 1 and Episode 2 out this week on Disney+, we spoke to showrunner/executive producer Dario Scardapane and executive producer Sana Amanat about Frank’s return, which is teased in the second episode.
Scardapane previously served as a producer and writer on the Netflix Punisher series, and he notes that the scene when Matt finds himself up against the dirty cops who framed White Tiger (the late Kamar de los Reyes) is definitely setting up the Punisher’s return — specifically in the form of a Punisher tattoo on one of the cops’ arms.
“Yes, that tattoo should be a hint,” says Scardapane. “There is a Frank Castle storyline that is, I think, deep and rich and has been begging to be told. It was in one of the comics, but Frank’s appearance is not random. It comes back to [the idea] of who is a vigilante, who’s good, who’s bad, and Frank is one of those incredibly galvanizing characters. Frank comes into our world with a purpose. That purpose is executed. Does it have something to do with these men that we see in that apartment? Yes.”
